The iFixit Device Page Project is a project where a team or a person will pick a device to write an informative repair page on. This page will include all the device’s information, any manuals or repair sources that can be used to repair this device and any additional information that is related to repairing the device. The purpose of this page is to have it optimized for search engines and to be an all-in-one page for any users to refer to for the device’s repair. My team chose the Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga to create and optimize a page for.
While working on this page, my team had to look for any resources and information related to this device. To do this, I have learned how to use the advance search function on Google to help me narrow down my searches for this device. I would use the advance search to look for specific file types or to look for sites that included specific key words.
While doing research for this page, I have come across many documents with a lot of technical information that is not useful for your average consumer. While writing up the device page, I had to learn how to filter out any unnecessary information and to only write the key points down on our page to keep it optimized.
While doing research for this project, there were many sources that were unreliable. During the research process, I have learned how to identify a site that would be considered reliable for research. I would filter out any site that did not seem trustworthy and only use trusted sources for the device page.
While working on this device page, there was one challenge that I have faced while working. This challenge was to find reliable sources, which was rather difficult. Since the device I was working on was relatively old, there were not a lot of sites that had information on it and those that did were mostly reviews or sites that want to sell you the device. Fortunately, to over come this challenge, Lenovo the manufacture of the devices, had a detailed information about the device. They had everything a technician would need to repair the device and had all the specs of the device as well. Additionally, a review site called NoteBook check had detailed benchmarks of the device, which provided a detailed third-party perspective of the device.
These skills would be very useful in the tech industry as looking for documentation to assist with work is very common. I have already started implementing these skills in my daily life in my home projects. I often come across issues with using my NAS and by using these skills, I often look online for documentation or forums to help me resolve my issues. I would use advance search to help me look for sites that only involve certain keywords and to use my judgement skills to help me filter out the untrustworthy sites.
