The iFixit Fast Fix Repair Guide project is a project where a user or a team will pick out a device and create a quick fix guide for a certain part of the device. For the project I worked on, my team decided to create a quick guide on a scroll wheel repair for the Logitech M325, a common office mouse. This project involves us taking pictures of the device, creating a simple written guide on how to repair the scroll wheel and accompanying pictures that help support the text.
When doing research for this guide, I had to look for existing content or guides for this mouse such as repairs or tear downs. During this process, I have learned how to use the advance search function on various websites such as Google and YouTube to narrow down content related to this mouse.
When creating this guide, I had to learn how to simplify my writing to keep things simple and concise.
While creating this guide, I was unaware that screw heads have different sizes and have overlooked it in my draft. When getting my work reviewed by iFixit, they informed me about this fact. I have learned that when working on a project, to ensure that I learn all the proper terminology related to the project.
While working on this project, there were a few small challenges that I ran into while creating this device page. The biggest challenge of the whole project was taking the pictures for the guide. I was in charge of taking these photos for my team as I was the one who owned the device; however, I did not own a tripod. To overcome this challenge, I propped up my phone on a jar and a box to allow me to take hands free pictures. I would use long objects placed in the jar to help keep my phone stable and a photo timer to take the photos. This was something I was not expecting to face while working on this project but it was a big learning experience. This has taught me to improvise and how to use nearby object to help me solve my problems.
This will be a very useful skill to have and use in other classes or in a professional setting. I have already implemented this skill in my management course. This course has weekly worksheets and recently, I have learned to not pad my writing when doing these sheets and instead go straight to my point.
By preparing the proper tools before working, it can allow you to save time while working and prevent you messing up your job. I have implemented this into my part time job working as an IT technician. At work, I would now take a few extra tools with me when working with a client in case I need it. This saves me from trying to improvise with the tools around me, but with little luck and saves me the time of returning back to my workspace to get the proper tool.
